UNC's Spending on Bill Belichick Hire After Contract, Staff, More Revealed in Report
North Carolina reportedly paid a hefty price to bring in new head coach Bill Belichick and his coaching staff at the end of the 2024 season.
According to Bruce Feldman, Brendan Marks and Stewart Mandel of The Athletic, Belichick is making $10 million per year while the team's staff, revenue share and "other pledges of investment" costs the school a total of $59.3 million.
North Carolina would still owe Belichick $20 million if it were to part ways with him and a buyout for the team's assistant coaches as well as general manager Michael Lombardi would cost $9.25 million (via Feldman, Marks, and Mandel).
The Tar Heels paid Belichick after his legendary NFL coaching career came to an end in 2023, winning six Super Bowl titles with the New England Patriots and finishing with an overall record of 302-165.
Still, the 73-year-old didn't have any college head coaching experience prior to joining North Carolina.
Belichick's first year patrolling the sidelines for the Tar Heels has fallen below expectations, with the team currently sitting at 2-3 with an 0-1 mark in the ACC.
North Carolina has lost its past two games, getting outscored 72-19 in both contests combined.
Meanwhile, Tar Heels cornerbacks coach Armond Hawkins was reportedly suspended Tuesday for an alleged NCAA violation of giving a player's family members sideline passes for a game.
Pat Welter of WRAL also reported that Belichick's program contains "a divided locker room, a disorganized coaching staff and a failure to communicate."
North Carolina reportedly held discussions about moving on from the head coach, although both sides reaffirmed their commitment to each other in statements released on Wednesday.
If the Tar Heels can't turn their season around quickly, buzz surrounding Belichick's possible departure will continue to grow.
