Texas Tech Reveals Black Homecoming Uniforms in New Video, 'Past Meets Present'

Mike ChiariOct 10, 2025

Ahead of their homecoming game against the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday night, the Texas Tech Red Raiders showed off their new uniforms celebrating the 100th anniversary of the football program.

The unis feature a black helmet with a red Texas Tech logo and stars, a black jersey with a red "Tech" emblazoned across the chest, and white pants. The official Texas Tech football account on X branded the fit as "past meets present."

With a perfect 5-0 record, Texas Tech is the No. 9-ranked team in the nation, and it has a chance to start 6-0 for the seventh time in program history.

After the new uniforms were first revealed in August, Uni-Watch.com's Susan Freeman provided some insight to them, noting that they are essentially a mashup for multiple eras of Texas Tech football.

The Tech wordmark on the jersey was first worn in 1925, and the helmet logo was introduced one year later. Also, the sleeve logo was first utilized in 1930, and the stars on the helmet represent the helmet awards first given to standout players in 1969.

Over the years, the Red Raiders have achieved no shortage of success, winning 11 conference titles, but national championships have eluded them, and it has been quite some time since they were last in the mix as a top team.

While the Red Raiders are trending toward their fifth consecutive winning season, they have not won double-digit games since going 11-2 in 2008 under head coach Mike Leach.

That was arguably the best and most successful team in program history, as quarterback Graham Harrell and wide receiver Michael Crabtree put up huge numbers in Leach's Air Raid offense.

This year's team under head coach Joey McGuire can draw some parallels to the 2008 squad, as the Red Raiders currently have the No. 2 scoring offense in the nation with 48.6 points per game.

Quarterback Behren Morton is firmly in the Heisman Trophy race by virtue of completing 69.3 percent of his passes for 1,410 yards, 12 touchdowns and three interceptions.

However, while Texas Tech allowed 27.8 points per game in 2008, this year's team is fourth in the country in scoring defense, allowing just 11.2 points per contest.

It can be argued that Texas Tech has taken advantage of a soft schedule, but a 34-10 win over then-No.16 ranked Utah and a 35-11 victory over Houston are nothing to sneeze at.

The Jayhawks are an unranked, but solid team at 4-2, and if Texas Tech wins another game in one-sided fashion against a Big 12 foe, it may be time to start considering the possibility that the Red Raiders are legitimate College Football Playoff and national title threats.
