Bill Belichick Reportedly Likely to Remain UNC HC Throughout 2025 CFB Season

Bill Belichick parting ways with North Carolina in the middle of the 2025 season doesn't appear to be a strong possibility despite the team's early struggles.

According to Pete Nakos of On3.com, a head coaching change during the current season for the Tar Heels "remains unlikely" despite the overall situation involving Belichick considered to be "fluid."

Assistant coach departures are a much more likely outcome while offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens "faces the most heat," per Nakos.

Tar Heels cornerbacks coach Armond Hawkins was suspended on Tuesday, with Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reporting that the suspension was related to an alleged NCAA rule violation regarding sideline passes being given to a player's family.

Some current North Carolina assistants "could be in new jobs by the time the College Football Playoff begins" this season, Nakos reported Wednesday.

According to Ollie Connolly of the Guardian, Belichick has "discussed buyout options" with North Carolina and has "signaled a willingness to trigger his own $1 million buyout" if he can find another team to join or a media role (h/t Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk).

Meanwhile, Pat Welter of WRAL News recently reported that Belichick's program contains "a divided locker room, a disorganized coaching staff and a failure to communicate."

The 73-year-old's first season patrolling the sidelines for the Tar Heels isn't off to an encouraging start, with his team sitting at 2-3 through five games. North Carolina has also suffered lopsided defeats in each of its past two appearances, losing by 53 combined points in both contests.
