BYU Mascot Pole Vaults Over Flaming Bar on Video in Stunt During West Virginia Game

Cosmo Cougar, BYU's beloved mascot, has added another wild stunt to his extensive resume.

During BYU's 38-24 win over West Virginia on Friday, Cosmo successfully pole vaulted over a flaming bar.

The legend of Cosmo Cougar dates back to his introduction in 1953 when he parachuted into LaVell Edwards Stadium. The original costume cost $73 and was purchased by BYU pep chairman Dwayne Stevenson.

Even though the costume has improved over the past 72 years, the stunts remain as intense as they have ever been at both football and basketball games.

This is at least the second fire-related trick Cosmo has done this decade. The Cougars mascot jumped through a ring fire during BYU's victory over Idaho State on Nov. 6, 2021.

The form on the jump through the ring of fire was much better than the pole vault. Friday's trick was a little nerve-wracking not only because of the fire bar, but Cosmo also veered far to his left that the rest of the cheer squad had to quickly adjust and move the crash pad to avoid a potentially rough landing.

Ultimately, Cosmo cleared the bar and was able to celebrate the moment of triumph with the crowd at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

It was part of a very good night for the Cougars, who improved their record to 5-0 this season with the victory over West Virginia. This marks the second consecutive season they have won five straight games to open the year.
