Niko Mikkola, Panthers Agree to 8-Year Contract Extension Worth Reported $40M
The Florida Panthers and defenseman Niko Mikkola agreed to an eight-year contract extension, the team announced on Friday.
TSN's Pierre LeBrun reported the deal will average $5 million a year.
Mikkola, 29, signed with the Panthers in 2023 and went on to win two straight Stanley Cups while mostly playing on the team's second defense pairing.

Florida is preparing to start the season without star forwards Matthew Tkachuk and Aleksander Barkov, who will both be sidelined for months after undergoing respective surgeries.
Tkachuk is eyeing a December return after undergoing surgery this offseason on multiple injuries including a torn adductor muscle that he played through during the Panthers' run to the Cup.
Barkov could meanwhile miss the regular season and the 2026 Olympics after undergoing surgery last week on the ACL and MCL following a training camp injury to his right knee.
Losing Tkachuk, who ranked third on the Panthers in goals and points last season, and Barkov, who won the Selke Trophy in back-to-back campaigns as the league's top defensive forward, will put even more pressure on Florida's defense this fall.
The Panthers can now ensure that defense includes Mikkola, who might have been a trade candidate at the deadline had he entered the season on his previous expiring $2.5 million AAV deal.
Originally drafted by the St. Louis Blues in 2015, Mikkola made his NHL debut in 2020. He played in 139 games over three and a half seasons with the Blues before he and his expiring contract were traded to the New York Rangers in 2023.
The following offseason Mikkola signed a three-year, $7.5 million contract to join the Panthers, a team at the time fresh out of a Stanley Cup Final loss to the Vegas Golden Knights.
He got a new defense partner this spring after Seth Jones was acquired by the Panthers from the Chicago Blackhawks at the 2025 trade deadline.
Jones and Mikkola proved to be one of the Panthers' strongest pairings during the team's run to a second straight Cup. The two were on the ice for 16 goals by the Panthers and just nine from opponents last postseason, per MoneyPuck.
With Jones, Aaron Ekblad and Gustav Forsling already signed to long-term deals, the Panthers will have their top four defenseman signed through at least 2029-30 once Mikkola is locked in, per Spotrac.
The Panthers will now hope to get key forwards like Tkachuk, and hopefully Barkov, back in the lineup in time to make a third straight Cup push in front of this defensive core next spring.
