Bob Melvin Fired as Giants Manager After Missing MLB Playoffs Past 2 Seasons

Joseph ZuckerSep 29, 2025

The San Francisco Giants announced Monday they fired manager Bob Melvin.

Melvin posted a 161-163 record in his two years in charge, with San Francisco failing to make the playoffs in both seasons. The Giants finished two games back of the Cincinnati Reds for the final wild-card spot in 2025.

The 63-year-old wasn't hired by the current regime, either. He was brought aboard by Farhan Zaidi, who was fired last fall and replaced by legendary catcher Buster Posey.

Following Sunday's 4-0 win over the Colorado Rockies, Melvin acknowledged his status for 2026 is up in the air:

Posey didn't really mince words about Monday's decision.

"The last couple of months have been both disappointing and frustrating for all of us, and we did not perform up to our standards," he said. "We now turn our focus to identifying a new leader to guide us forward."

Melvin was supposed to deliver immediate results. He's a three-time Manager of the Year winner who had a .528 winning percentage over 11 years with the Oakland Athletics. The A's made the playoffs six times under his watch.

Much like his two-year spell with the San Diego Padres, though, things didn't seem to click for Melvin in San Francisco.

ESPN's Buster Olney mentioned Chicago Cubs bench coach Ryan Flaherty could be a candidate to replace Melvin.

In addition to who will reside in the dugout, fans will be curious to see how Posey tries to improve the roster this winter.

As unflattering as the Giants' 81-81 record might look, a third-place finish in the NL West and narrowly missing out on the wild card isn't a dramatically worse position than a lot of people predicted before Opening Day.

Acquiring Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox ahead of the trade deadline showed a lot of ambition but didn't necessarily raise San Francisco's ceiling.

Hiring a new manager won't catapult the Giants above the San Diego Padres or bridge the gap on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the division on its own. Posey will need to be active in addressing the holes across the roster.
