Virginia Fined $50K for Storming Field After Viral Video of Upset over No. 8 FSU

The University of Virginia was fined $50,000 by the ACC after fans stormed the field at Scott Stadium on Friday night following UVA's 46-38 double overtime upset of No. 8 Florida State.

The ACC said in a statement the fine was incurred for "violation of the league's event security policy."

Fans waiting on the grass hill behind the north endzone rushed onto the field after Cavaliers defensive back Ja'son Prevard intercepted a pass meant for Seminoles wide receiver Squirrel White to seal UVA's first home win over a top-ten team.

The $50,000 fine will go toward a scholarship fund for ACC student-athletes attending graduate school, according to the league.

A UVA spokesperson told WRIC's Clare Gehlich that 19 people had been treated at UVA Health University Medical Center after the field rush.

The ACC implemented field rushing fines in new policies announced ahead of the 2025-26 academic year, which directed member football and basketball programs to ensure "that only student-athletes, coaches, officials, and authorized personnel are allowed in the competition area before, during, and at the conclusion of any competition."

Virginia was fined $50,000 for a first offense of this policy. A second violation in men's basketball, women's basketball or football will cost the school $100,000, followed by a $200,000 fine for any subsequent incidents, according to the league.

Field rushing penalties have been increasing across the NCAA. The SEC introduced a flat $500,000 fine for rushing the field ahead of this season, which was implemented earlier this month after Mississippi State fans ran onto the field following a win over then-No. 12 Arizona State.
