Brian Kelly, No. 4 LSU Ripped By CFB Fans After Loss to Lane Kiffin, No. 13 Ole Miss
LSU football coach Brian Kelly is at risk of seeing his team drop out of the top five of the AP poll for the first time this regular season.
The No. 4 Tigers were held to a season-low 254 total yards of offense on Saturday night in a 24-19 road loss to No. 13 Ole Miss and coach Lane Kiffen.
College football fans were ready to lay the blame on Kelly for LSU's 57 total rushing yards as well as the team's inability to capitalize on turnovers or convert third downs. The Tigers converted just two of 11 third-down attempts in the loss.
Kelly previously expressed frustration with a reporter who asked about LSU's third-down efficiency after a Sept. 13 win over Florida.
LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, who entered his fifth season with the Tigers as a preseason Heisman Trophy favorite and potential top NFL draft prospect, also received criticism for his struggles in Saturday's loss.
Nussmeier went 21-for-34 for 197 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while also losing seven yards on two carries in the loss.
Nussmeier started out the game by putting LSU ahead early with the only touchdown of the first quarter.
Both teams then turned the ball over in a mistake-ridden second quarter, which Nussmeier started out by getting picked off by Ole Miss safety Wydett Williams Jr.
Ole Miss wideout Cayden Lee then fumbled a pass from Trinidad Chambliss to hand the ball back to the Tigers.
LSU wasn't able to score on the ensuing possession, however, and Ole Miss took a commanding lead with two straight touchdown drives to end the half.
Despite forcing another Ole Miss turnover with a PJ Woodland interception in the third quarter, the Tigers were limited to a field goal on the next possession.
LSU attempted a late comeback by sending in Harlem Berry for a six-yard rushing touchdown to get the Tigers within five points of tying the game with just over five minutes remaining.
The comeback push, and LSU's final drive, ended after Nussmeier threw two incompletions to go three and out.
Ole Miss improved to 5-0 with the victory, including 3-0 in SEC play.
LSU, which started out the season by defeating No. 4 Clemson and recorded subsequent wins over Louisiana Tech, Florida and Southeastern Louisiana, fell to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play
After going 5-3 in SEC play last season, Kelly will look to help the Tigers improve their in-conference record with a win over South Carolina when his team returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 11.
