Deion Sanders Reveals Changing Spelling of His Name Due to 'Old MacDonald' Song

Doric SamSep 22, 2025

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders confirmed a longstanding myth that makes him even more iconic.

During an appearance on the New Heights podcast (36:00 mark), the Kelce Brothers asked Sanders whether it's true that his first name is actually spelled Dion, and he was flabbergasted that they uncovered such a rare piece of lore that turned out to be a fact.

"That's true, but let me tell you what I did," Sanders responded. "You're a kid going to school, learning how to spell, and we all know the song."

Sanders was referring to the classic children's song, "Old MacDonald." He revealed that he changed the spelling of his name as a child to match the refrain from the song.

"E-I-O. So it was D-E-I-O-N. I got it from 'Old MacDonald,'" Sanders said.

Even as a youngster, Coach Prime was so sure of himself that he changed the way his name is spelled, and no one batted an eye.

"That's the way I spell it," he declared definitively. "On my birth certificate, it's D-I-O-N, but I've always spelled it D-E-I-O-N."
