As part of the SEC's current scheduling format that features divisional play, teams could go as many as six seasons without playing each other. ESPN noted that the repeat opponents are "balanced by the teams playing each league opponent every two years."
The new nine-game schedule format that will be introduced next year will feature three annual opponents, six rotating opponents and an annual opponent that will be Notre Dame or another power conference team. In addition to each SEC team playing one another in a two-year span, there's a plan in place to have teams visit every venue in the league over the four-year span.
Teams were slotted based on their combined league record from the last four years. Oklahoma and Texas, which only joined the SEC last year, had to carry over three seasons from the Big 12 to determine their placement.
Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports noted:
It will take some time to get used to the new format, but it's clear that the SEC feels this is what's best for its teams. Still, the implementation of the new schedule means certain rivalries won't be maintained on an annual basis, most notably including Alabama vs. LSU and Florida vs. Tennessee.
