Bill Belichick Trolled, UNC Hire Questioned by Fans After Blowout Loss vs. UCF

Paul KasabianSep 20, 2025

Bill Belichick and the UNC football program endured a brutal 34-9 road loss to UCF on Saturday afternoon, dropping the Tar Heels to 2-2 on the year in the eight-time Super Bowl winner's first year as head coach.

UNC began the year with a crushing 48-14 home loss to TCU but rebounded well by beating Charlotte and Richmond by a combined score of 61-9. However, when the competition stiffened again Saturday against UCF, the Tar Heels had no answers.

Knights quarterback Tayven Johnson crushed UNC in the air (25-of-32, 223 yards, one touchdown) and on the ground (66 rushing yards, one more score). UCF out-gained UNC 366-217, and the Tar Heels gained just 3.7 yards per play.

In addition, there was a huge discrepancy overall on the ground, with UCF amassing 143 yards and three touchdowns on 34 carries, while UNC had just 63 yards and no scored on 25 carries (2.5 YPA).

UNC starting quarterback Gio Lopez and the Tar Heels' offense couldn't get much going, with the signal-caller completing 11-of-14 passes for just 87 yards and two interceptions. Max Johnson fared better in relief, connecting on 11-of-19 passes for 67 yards and UNC's lone touchdown.

UCF led 10-0 after the first quarter and 20-3 at halftime before scoring a touchdown with 9:51 left in the third quarter on a Myles Montgomery one-yard score en route to a 27-3 lead.

UNC got one score back after Johnson found Kobe Paysour for an eight-yard touchdown, but UCF held firm from there and closed the game with Jaden Nixon's five-yard TD run.

Needless to say, Belichick's UNC tenure has gotten off to a rocky start, and fans have taken notice.

UNC has a bye week to reset before playing Clemson in a battle between two teams having disappointing seasons. The Tigers began the season ranked fourth in the Associated Press preseason poll, but they now sit 1-3 after losing 34-21 at home to Syracuse on Saturday.
