Dabo Swinney's Clemson Contract Buyout, Details Outlined After Upset Loss to Syracuse

Clemson fell to 1-3 to open the 2025 season with a disheartening 34-21 loss to Syracuse on Saturday.

Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney's job security may be shaky if his team can't bounce back soon, as the school's last season with a losing record occurred in 2010.

Swinney previously signed a 10-year contract extension worth $115 million to stay with Clemson in 2022. His deal contains a $60 million buyout in 2025, which drops to $57 million in 2026.

After that, a buyout would become the full remaining salary left on his deal (via ESPN's Andrea Adelson).

If Swinney is bought out in 2025, his $60 million would be paid in monthly installments until his contract term runs out in Dec. 2031 or paid in full within 90 days of his termination.

Clemson entered the 2025 season with high expectations after winning the ACC Championship Game and making a College Football Playoff appearance in 2024, sitting at No. 4 in the first Associated Press Top 25 poll.

The Tigers opened their 2025 campaign with a 17-10 loss to LSU. While they secured a 27-16 win over Troy the following week, they couldn't maintain their momentum and suffered a 24-21 defeat at the hands of Georgia Tech on Sept. 13.

Clemson amassed 503 total yards of offense against Syracuse on Saturday, but failed to keep up with the scoring of the Orange due to several miscues. The Tigers committed two turnovers and converted a mere three of 13 opportunities on third down.

Swinney's overall tenure at Clemson has been wildly successful, owning a 181-50 record across his 18 years at the school while winning two national championships.

His long-term future with the program could become murky if losses continue to pile up, though.
