LeBron James Says He's 'Not Hinting' at Anything amid Lakers, NBA Retirement Rumors
Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is nearing the end of his legendary career, but he's putting the retirement rumors to rest for now.
During an appearance on 360 With Speedy, James denied the notion that he's sending signals that he's retiring soon.
"I'm not hinting at anything," James said at the 17:50 mark. "Obviously, I know I'm on the other side of the hump, for sure. Come on now, I'm not about to play another 23 years, that's for damn sure, and I'm not about to play another 10. I'm definitely gearing up to where the end is, I'm not there yet."
The 40-year-old fueled retirement speculation with his newfound hobby of playing golf this offseason, as well as his "Forever King" Tour with Nike to celebrate the release of his 23rd sneaker. However, he reiterated that while the end is near, he made it clear that he's not ready to step off the court.
"Listen guys, every time I pick up something new, it does not mean retirement. ... It's just something I want to do, just a little hobby," James said. "But retirement is coming, it is coming. It's just not here just yet."
While the end of his career is on the horizon, James is still one of the best players in the NBA. In 2024-25, he played in 70 games and averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists. He earned his 21st All-Star selection and was named to the All-NBA second team.
James is hoping to add a fifth NBA title to his mantle before he calls it a career. The Lakers reloaded this offseason by landing center Deandre Ayton and guard Marcus Smart to add more depth behind James and star guard Luka Doncic.
Still, it's clear that time is winding down on James' career, so fans will have to enjoy watching him while he's still around.
