NCAA Transfer Portal Rule Change Proposed to Have 1 Window, Eliminate Spring Period
The NCAA Division I Football Subdivision Oversight Committee proposed a modification of the transfer portal window that would eliminate the spring period on Sept. 4.
Under the proposal, undergraduate and postgraduate FBS athletes would be eligible to enter the portal between Jan. 2 and Jan. 11.
The Division I Administrative Committee must approval of the proposal before it can be implemented, with a vote expected to occur before Oct. 1.
NBC Sports' Nicole Auerbach reported Wednesday that the Administrative Committee agreed to put an end to the spring transfer window, although the exact dates for a new window at the end of the fall semester were still uncertain.
A decision regarding the exact details of a new window is expected to come "within the month," according to Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger.
Before the proposal, student-athletes were required to initiate notification of their intention to enter the portal during a 20-day period in December as well as a 10-day period in April.
While the spring period would be eliminated under the proposed format, a new transfer window would also make it easier for teams to manage their rosters without worrying about potentially losing players to the portal before their respective seasons come to an end.
A single window isn't entirely uncommon, as NCAA men's and women's basketball players have a sole 30-day window to submit their names into the portal.
Now, FBS athletes may be following suit.
