Arch Manning Says It'll Be 'Hard to Sleep' After Struggles in Texas' Win vs. UTEP
Texas quarterback Arch Manning told reporters he is "a little bit" mad at himself after struggling with passing accuracy while leading the Longhorns to a 27-10 Saturday win over UTEP.
"I'm just frustrated. I know I'm better than this," Manning said after Saturday's win, per Danny Davis of the Austin Statesman. "It's a little frustrating.
"It's going to be hard to sleep tonight, but I'll be back rolling."
Manning continued, per Jim Vertuna of the Associated Press: "All my life I've been an accurate passer. I've just got to get back to it."
Manning ran in two touchdowns and passed for another, but completed just 11 of 25 pass attempts and threw an interception in the Week 3 win.
That included a stretch of ten consecutive incomplete passes in the first half, highlighted by Xavier Smith's second-quarter interception.
Manning continue to struggle with accuracy after the pick, including an overthrow on a potential touchdown pass to Parker Livingstone on the Longhorns' following drive.
Texas finished the game having gone 5-for-16 on third down opportunities and 2-for-5 on fourth downs.
"I felt like he pressed some tonight. He knew he was missing some throws that I think he's comfortable making," Sarkisian said Manning after the game (h/t KXAN's Noah Gross). "And then you start skipping reads, and scrambling, and relying on his legs too much.
"And that's always my caution, is that when you have a little success with your legs, then you start to rely on your legs. And then you're out of scheme, and now we're just playing athlete football... we've got to get back to believing in the scheme."
Texas' defense remained strong in Saturday's win, holding UTEP to just 50 rushing yards and limiting the Miners to one touchdown.
The Longhorns improve to 2-1 with the win and will now face another non-conference opponent in Sam Houston next Saturday. Sarkisian will need to find a way to get more consistency out of Manning's passing game as Texas prepares to open SEC play on Oct. 4 at Florida.
