No. 12 Clemson Upset by Unranked GT as CFB Fans Rip Dabo Swinney, Cade Klubnik
The Clemson Tigers came into Saturday's showdown with Georgia Tech ranked No. 12 in the country. Add a dash between those numbers and you have the team's current record.
It's been a shockingly bad start to the season for Clemson, which dropped to 1-2 after losing on the road against the Yellow Jackets, 24-21.
Cade Klubnik had an up-and-down performance for the Tigers in the loss, finishing 15-of-26 for 207 yards, a touchdown and an interception through the air. He added 62 yards and a touchdown as a runner, though he also lost a fumble.
Clemson opened the season ranked No. 4 overall, but a 17-10 loss against LSU to start the season cast their championship contender bona fides into doubt. Now, the loss to Georgia Tech is not only adding fuel to that fire, but it also may jeopardize their hopes to win the ACC.
Suffice to say, Clemson fans and pundits were not happy with the performance, aiming much of their ire at head coach Dabo Swinney and Klubnik:
Swinney and Klubnik didn't lose this one alone, of course. Georgia Tech took over with three minutes and 26 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter after Clemson tied the game at 21 apiece and the Tigers couldn't get them off the field, allowing the game-winning 55-yard field goal from Aidan Birr (which also happened to be his career-long make).
That make prompted the Georgia Tech student section to rush the field in jubilation. It will also cost the program $50,000 for violating ACC rules, but it's a small price to pay for the signature win.
And the defense didn't seem to have an answer for quarterback Haynes King in general, who threw for 216 yards and rushed for 103 yards and a score against them.
Suddenly, it's Georgia Tech that looks like it could make some noise in the ACC. Clemson, meanwhile, is looking for a way to turn its season around.
