Deion Sanders 'Dumbfounded' by Colorado Loss, Takes Responsibility for 'Foolishness'

Adam WellsSep 13, 2025

Deion Sanders was not happy with what he saw from Colorado in Friday's 36-20 loss to Houston.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Sanders explained he's "dumbfounded" with how the team played coming off a "wonderful week" of practice and preparation.

Sanders opened his postgame press conference by taking responsibility for what he called the "foolishness" of Colorado's performance.

Coach Prime and his staff have been trying to figure out their best lineup after losing several key contributors, including Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, from the 2024 team.

Friday saw Ryan Staub make his first start at quarterback after Kaidon Salter struggled in the first two games. Staub got the nod over both Salter and freshman Julian Lewis after going 7-of-10 for 158 yards and two touchdowns against Delaware on Sept. 6.

The results were more of the same for the Buffaloes even with Staub under center. He finished 19-of-35 for 204 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. They ran for a season-low 96 yards on 23 carries.

Colorado's defense continues to have issues stopping the run and pass. Houston quarterback Connor Weigman threw for 222 yards on 24 attempts, an average of 9.3 yards per attempt.

Opposing quarterbacks have averaged at least 7.2 yards per attempt in three games against this defense.

The Buffaloes also gave up 213 rushing yards to Houston. They are allowing 205.7 yards per game on the ground.

Sanders' team has now lost each of its last three games away from home by double-digits. The streak dates back to last season with a loss at Kansas and a 36-14 loss to BYU in the Alamo Bowl.

This marks the first time during Sanders' tenure as Colorado's head coach that the team has been under .500 through three games (1-2).

The Buffalos will return to the friendly confines of Folsom Field for their next two games. They host Wyoming on Sept. 20 before opening Big 12 play on Sept. 27 against BYU.
