Preview and Prediction

Saturday's game could very well come down to quarterback play.

Georgia's offense has looked anything but confident through the first two games of the season behind signal-caller Gunner Stockton. Against Marshall and Austin Peay, the junior completed 40-of-58 passes for 417 yards, averaging 7.2 yards per attempt and scoring two touchdowns.

Those are middling numbers which should have been significantly better against the sub-par competition the Bulldogs met in the first two weeks of the season. Luckily for the former two-time national champions, they have consistently had the best of their conference foe.

Tennessee has averaged just 13 points against Georgia, despite a recent resurgence on the national stage. Even at home, with a raucous crowd in Neyland Stadium, it won't be easy to improve upon those numbers.

Freshman quarterback Jake Merklinger is playing his first SEC game Saturday. Against East Tennessee State a week ago, he looked fine, completing just nine-of-14 passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns. Unfortunately, the Buccaneers are not the Bulldogs. Georgia has one of the toughest defenses in the country and will make life difficult for the first-year starter.

If the Volunteers had a more established quarterback under center, or an offense that had proven against quality opposition that it was explosive, there would be a case to be made for taking Tennessee at home against a Georgia team that has not exhibited that it can move the ball against legitimate competition.

Unfortunately for the host team, an unproven offense of its own, against a defense with the potential to be one of the best in the nation sooner rather than later, is a losing formula for the Vols.

Prediction: Georgia frustrates Tennessee's offense, wins
