Landry Shamet, Knicks Agree to 1-Year Contract Ahead of 2025-26 NBA Season

The New York Knicks agreed to a one-year contract with shooting guard Landry Shamet in free agency on Thursday, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.

The Knicks are also planning to sign guard Garrison Mathews to a training camp deal. He is "expected to compete for a roster spot," according to the New York Post's Stefan Bondy.

Shamet previously spent the 2024-25 season with the Knicks, appearing in 50 regular-season games and 11 playoff contests.

The 28-year-old remained in New York throughout the offseason and was "hoping" to return to the team as a free agent before signing on Thursday, per the Associated Press.

According to SNY's Ian Begley, Shamet had "other options" but chose to come back to the Knicks because he "wanted to return to a locker room he liked" and help the team "compete for a title."

He opened training camp in New York ahead of his 2024-25 campaign, but was waived by the team after suffering a shoulder injury in the preseason. Shamet eventually signed with the Knicks in Dec. 2024 after recovering, making his team debut just one day after agreeing to a contract.

He finished his inaugural year in New York with averages of 5.7 points and 1.2 rebounds in 15.2 minutes per game, shooting 46.1 percent from the field and 39.7 percent from three-point territory.

Shamet showcased his efficiency from behind the arc in the season half of the season, recording 7.6 points per game on 46.3/42.5/76.9 shooting splits after the All-Star break.

He wasn't a consistent member of New York's rotation to open the playoffs, but gradually received more playing time as the team's postseason run continued into the Eastern Conference Finals.

While the Knicks ultimately fell to the Indiana Pacers in six games during the conference finals, Shamet's plus-16.5 net rating in the series was the highest on the team among players to average at least 10 minutes per game (via NBA.com).

It's unknown if he'll have a guaranteed rotation spot in New York at the start of the 2025-26 season under new head coach Mike Brown, especially after the team signed Jordan Clarkson earlier in the offseason.

Still, Shamet's shooting prowess and familiarity with the Knicks' current roster could make him a valuable depth piece.
