Why Lamine Yamal's LeBron James Celebration Has Caused Controversy in Spain

Mimicking an NBA legend has led Barcelona star Lamine Yamal to become a somewhat polarizing figure in Spain.

The 18-year-old has begun celebrating goals by placing an invisible crown on his head, taking a page from the Los Angeles Lakers' LeBron James.

The Athletic's Pol Ballús explained Wednesday how this "has caused something of a stir" and is part of a wider conversation about Lamal's behavior away from the pitch.

"Yamal's crowning celebration is just the latest entry point for these voices to have their say on whether he conforms to the behaviour they deem 'appropriate,'" Ballús wrote. "Spoiler alert: it's not. They cast it as boastful, somehow not fitting for a 'young role model.'"

It appears as though Yamal is tuning this all out.

"According to sources close to Yamal — who preferred to speak anonymously to protect their position — the young footballer accepts that he will attract this kind of media attention," Ballús reported. "He does not care too much, they said."

This certainly isn't the first time a world football star has paid homage to James. The crown celebration is a little different, though, given how it's bound to be perceived. Being as young as Lamal and doing it is even more bold.

But possessing supreme confidence has undoubtedly allowed the teenage to ascend so quickly in his career. He's widely regarded as one of the brightest emerging talents in the sport.

Yamal had only just turned 17 when he celebrated a Euro 2024 triumph with Spain and was selected for the team of the tournament. He has since collected a La Liga title and Copa del Rey winner's medal.

One consequence of occupying a starring role for Barcelona or Real Madrid is that you're going to be disliked by a wide portion of Spain, such is the rivalry between the two clubs. Then there's the general hostility toward Barça due to being one of the biggest clubs in the world.

As long as he's performing at a world-class level, Yamal will have his detractors. He might as well lean into it a little bit.
