Texas' Steve Sarkisian Denies Arch Manning Has Shoulder Injury After Viral Video

Joseph ZuckerSep 8, 2025

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian denied quarterback Arch Manning was dealing with any sort of shoulder issue in last Saturday's 38-7 win over San Jose State.

A video of Manning grimacing while throwing a pass went viral over the weekend and led a lot of fans to ask questions.

Sarkisian shut the conversation down Monday when asked directly by a reporter about Manning seeming to play through pain:

The redshirt sophomore went 19-of-30 for 295 yards, four touchdowns and an interception against the Spartans. It was a welcome contrast from his forgettable showing in Texas' 14-7 loss to Ohio State to open the season.

The OSU game is when the speculation over Manning's health began. Former NFL quarterback Kurt Benkert speculated that "his arm is either weak or injured" on the basis of what he saw in Columbus, Ohio.

College football coaches have historically been very secretive when it comes to player injuries because the NCAA lacked uniform reporting rules like the NFL has. The pendulum is shifting in that regard, thanks in part to how legalized gambling requires a much higher level of transparency.

As long as he's playing, there's little reason to think Manning is hurt, especially because of how painful a shoulder injury is and how much it can disrupt a quarterback's mechanics.

The video of Manning isn't all that incriminating, either. Anybody who watched Duke basketball coach Jon Scheyer in college can attest to how some athletes are more expressive than others.

Arch wouldn't even be the first from his own family to look like the mere act of throwing a football requires an effort of Herculean scale.

This all serves as another reminder of how closely scrutinized the 21-year-old is.
