Windhorst Says Lakers 'Don't Know' If LeBron James Will Retire After 2026 NBA Season
Uncertainty is reportedly the overarching feeling when it comes to LeBron James' long-term future with the Los Angeles Lakers.
ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported on The Hoop Collective podcast (1:11:50 mark) that the Lakers do not know if the legendary forward plans on retiring after the 2025-26 season.
"Now, as far as LeBron's future—I know there's a lot of speculation," Windhorst said. "Based on my conversations, I honestly think they don't know. As far as I know, he's honestly going year to year. Could this be his last year? Yes. Will it be his last year? I don't know. Does he know right now? Maybe. But my interpretation is that it has not been established. He will see where he's at at the end of the year."

LeBron Talks 'Unacceptable' Performance

Scoot Scores 0 in Historic Loss
The upcoming season is the final one on James' contract. He is also set to turn 41 years old in December and realistically doesn't have anything left to accomplish on the basketball court as one of the league's all-time greats.
It could also be something of a sticky situation if he decides he does want to keep playing after the 2025-26 campaign.
On the one hand, logic would dictate the Lakers would want to bring back someone with James' resume who was still Second Team All-NBA in his age-40 season in 2024-25. On the other hand, the team may be ready to move on to the Luka Dončić era in terms of roster construction and the use of resources.
James himself seemed to understand that given comments from his agent, Rich Paul, in June.
"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul said, per ESPN's Shams Charania. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all.
"... We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him."
Trade speculation has certainly quieted with the season approaching, but those were still head-turning comments that brought the King's future with the Lakers firmly under the spotlight for much of the offseason.
If he decides to continue playing after the 2025-26 season, that future will once again be under the spotlight.
And it might lead to some difficult questions for the Lakers.
