Bill Belichick Gets 1st Win with UNC, Applauded by CFB Fans in Rebound from TCU Loss
Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels picked up their first win of the season after a disappointing start in a 20-3 win over the Charlotte 49ers on Saturday on the road.
Tar Heels' quarterback Gio Lopez completed 17-of-25 passes for 155 yards and one touchdown, connecting with junior wide receiver Chris Culliver, who had 74 yards on three receptions and one touchdown. Running back Davion Gause added a touchdown on the ground.
Fans celebrated as Belichick earned his first college win with North Carolina in his second game since making the jump from the NFL.
After a lopsided 48-14 home loss to TCU in Week 1, Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels responded with a strong showing in Week 2.
UNC opened the game with a quick three-play, 59-second drive, capped by a 51-yard touchdown pass from Lopez to Culliver. Kicker Rece Verhoff added the extra point to put the Tar Heels up 7-0.
On their next possession, UNC settled for a 49-yard field goal from Verhoff to extend the lead to 10-0 — a score that held into the second quarter.
The Tar Heels added another score just before halftime, capping an 11-play drive with a rushing touchdown from freshman running back Gause to take a 17-3 lead into the break.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, but Verhoff added a 33-yard field goal early in the fourth to push the lead to 20-3.
UNC's defense sealed the win in the final quarter, recording two interceptions and keeping Charlotte off the board.
The Tar Heels will return home next Saturday to face Richmond, looking to build momentum on their home field.
