Deion Sanders Says He Has 'Plan' for Colorado at QB After Ryan Staub Impresses in Win
Colorado head coach Deion Sanders discussed the team's quarterback situation following the Buffaloes' 31-7 win over Delaware on Saturday.
"I got a plan," Sanders said after the victory. "Like I had a plan coming into this game, I have a plan. I don't know if I'm going to disclose until we get to our destination, but I saw what everybody else saw today."
Third-string quarterback Ryan Staub entered the game in the second quarter for Colorado and finished 7-of-10 for 157 yards and two touchdowns without getting picked off.
After the Buffaloes' offense was inconsistent early in the first half, Staub led them into the end zone on three of his four drives. This included a 71-yard touchdown pass to Sincere Brown.
Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter, who started in Colorado's season-opening 27-20 loss to Georgia Tech, opened Saturday's contest under center before he was replaced by 17-year-old true freshman Julian Lewis in the second quarter.
Lewis was on the field for two possessions until Staub took over, with Salter eventually playing again in the fourth quarter.
Salter finished 13-of-16 for 102 yards against Delaware, while Lewis completed two of his four pass attempts for eight yards.
Colorado's first-string quarterback position was uncertain throughout the offseason, with Salter being named the team's starter just three days prior to the defeat at the hands of Georgia Tech.
If Sanders wants to stick with a familiar option under center, Staub could be his choice moving forward.
Staub has been with the Buffaloes in each of Sanders' first two years at the school, operating as a backup. In seven combined appearances as a reserve in 2023 and 2024, he completed 52.3 percent of his throws for 254 yards and one touchdown without tossing an interception.
Colorado will face Houston in its third game of the season on Friday.
