Arch Manning Says He Has 'A Lot to Work On' After Texas' Bounce-Back Win vs. SJSU

Texas quarterback Arch Manning says he has "a lot to work on" after leading the Longhorns to their first win of the season with a 38-7 Saturday victory over visiting San Jose State.

Manning criticized himself for the red-zone interception he threw in the third quarter of Saturday's win. The pick was made by Spartans defensive back Jalen Apalit-Williams.

"I thought it was sloppy for my part," Manning said, per ESPN's Dave Wilson. "Can't turn the ball over in the red area. I've got to play better. I think all around it was a little sloppy."

Manning also expressed regret for his struggles to connect with wide receiver Ryan Wingo, including an overthrown pass to the end zone on a first-and-10 from Texas' eight-yard line in the second quarter.

"I should have had Ryan," Manning said about the overthrown pass, per The Athletic's Sam Khan Jr. "I overthrew it. I really want that one back."

Manning finished the day having gone 19-for-30 with 295 passing yards and four touchdowns as well as the interception.

Those four touchdowns took place over a span of about five minutes. Manning also ran for a fifth touchdown to seal the blowout win.

The first-year starter previously struggled with accuracy during last Saturday's season opener, when Ohio State's secondary regularly stopped Texas wideouts like Ryan Wingo and DeAndre Moore Jr. from getting open.

Manning ultimately went 17-for-30 last Saturday with 170 yards, one touchdown and one interception in a 14-7 loss that dropped the Longhorns six spots to No. 7 in the AP Top 25 poll.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian was more complimentary of the improvements in Manning's game between Game 1 and Game 2. He called the 21-year-old quarterback's success "a byproduct of the week of work," per Wilson.

"He played aggressive throughout the week. He studied the game plan. He knew exactly what we were trying to do, and I thought today he played more of his style," Sarkisian said, per Wilson. "He extended plays, used his legs, scrambles for a touchdown. That's the style of player that he is."

Texas' non-conference schedules continues over the next two weeks with games against UTEP and Houston. Manning's next ranked test will come on Saturday, Oct. 4, when the Longhorns travel to face No. 13 Florida in Gainesville.
