Michigan, Oklahoma Championship Aspirations at Stake Early

The Oklahoma Sooners and Michigan Wolverines earned victories in Week 1 but will face an entirely different level of competition Saturday when they square off at 7:30 p.m. on ESPn.

Michigan's five-star recruit, freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood, will see his first Top 25 competition while the home team's John Mateer, a transfer from Washington State, will look to officially kick off what could be a Heisman campaign in 2025.

Those two will likely define the outcome of Saturday's game. Underwood has not yet faced a fast, tough defense like the Sooners', which head coach Brent Venables will have ready to combat the first-year starter's strengths. How he handles the pressure and adapts to it throughout the game will determine whether the Wolverines can potentially pull off the upset.

He was solid against New Mexico a week ago, completing 21 of 31 for 251 yards and a touchdown. The question, though, is whether he can do that against an elite program, in a hostile setting, under the bright lights of and on the enormous stage of a primetime ESPN game.

Mateer kicked off his first season in Oklahoma, completing 30 of 37 passes for 392 yards, three touchdowns, and a passer rating of 191.4. His performance against Illinois State should have Sooners fans excited about his prospects this season.

Much like Underwood, those stats came against lower tier competition and Michigan will provide tougher opposition. Still, Mateer has played a lot of college ball dating back to his time in Washington State, has seen explosive and electric offense, and knows what it takes to get the win.

In a battle between quarterbacks, in a game that may ultimately determine their playoff eligibility later this season, Mateer and the Sooners have the advantage. The raucous crowd on the campus of the University of Oklahoma will makes it more so.
