Angel Reese Says She Apologized to Sky Teammates, Comments Were 'Taken out of Context'
Angel Reese revealed that she apologized to her Chicago Sky teammates following her comments regarding them in a recent interview.
"I don't think I'm frustrated, I'm probably am frustrated at myself right now," Reese told reporters Wednesday. "I think the language is taken out of context and I really didn't intentionally mean to put down my teammates because they've been through this with me throughout the whole year."
"I want to apologize to my teammates, which I already have about the article," she added.
Reese said that "we need great players" in the upcoming offseason during a recent interview with Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune.
While it won't come as a surprise if Chicago looks to undergo significant roster turnover with the team currently owning a 10-30 record, Reese brought up several of her current teammates by name.
The forward expressed concerns about the team solely counting on veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot, who suffered a season-ending torn ACL in June.
"We can't rely on Courtney to come back at the age that she's at," Reese told Poe. "I know she'll be a great asset for us, but we can't rely on that. We need someone probably a little younger with some experience, somebody who's been playing the game and is willing to compete for a championship and has done it before."
Reese also didn't believe that backups Rachel Banham and Hailey Van Lith were better prepared to lead a playoff team.
Annie Costabile of Front Office Sports later reported that the rest of the Sky roster saw Reese's remarks and were "unhappy with the direct attacks." A team meeting was planned to address the comments directly.
There was also "belief" that Reese's future in Chicago may be irreparable following the situation, per Costabile.
Still, it's admirable that the two-time All-Star apologized to her teammates both publicly and privately for her comments.
Reese is averaging 14.7 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game this season while shooting 45.8 percent from the field.
