Deion Sanders Reveals Advice He Gave Travis Hunter After Jaguars Star Became a Father
Colorado head coach Deion Sanders shared the advice he gave to Travis Hunter after the Jacksonville Jaguars rookie became a father for the first time.
Speaking to reporters during his weekly press conference on Tuesday (starts at 48:40 mark), Sanders' words to Hunter were to make sure that "no matter what happens in life" to "make sure that we're the best darn fathers that ever walked."
In a video posted to his YouTube channel on Aug. 27 titled "Dear Son...", Hunter chronicled the journey from his wife Leanna Lenee revealing she was pregnant to the birth of their son.
Sanders closed his comments by noting he is "proud" of Hunter and that he misses him "dearly" as the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner embarks on the next chapter of his life and career.
Hunter was an essential part of Sanders' coaching career over the past three seasons. He was the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2022 class, per 247Sports' composite rankings.
Despite being originally committed to Florida State, Hunter flipped to Jackson State, where Sanders was coaching. They helped lead the Tigers to a 12-1 record and the Celebration Bowl in 2022.
After Sanders was hired as Colorado's head coach in December 2022, Hunter followed him to Boulder. The move paid off in spectacular fashion for everyone involved.
The Buffaloes were must-see TV over the past two seasons. They cracked the top 20 in the Associated Press poll both years after not reaching that level from 2019 to '22.
Last season saw Hunter turn in one of the best college seasons of all-time playing on both sides of the ball. He had 1,258 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns as a wide receiver, along with 11 passes defensed and four interceptions as a cornerback.
Hunter won the Heisman Trophy and became the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft by the Jaguars. He capped off his spring by getting married to Lenee in May after the couple got engaged in 2024.
The 22-year-old will be able to have his newborn son watch his NFL debut. Hunter and the Jaguars will open the 2025 regular season on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.
