Dan Lanning Responds to Mike Gundy Calling out Oregon Spending Millions on CFB Team

Doric SamSep 2, 2025

Ahead of Saturday's matchup between No. 7 Oregon and Oklahoma State, the head coaches are going back and forth in the media.

After Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy declared during his radio show that Oregon "spent close to $40 [million] last year alone" on its roster, Ducks head coach Dan Lanning responded during his weekly news conference.

"If you want to be a top-10 team in college football, you better be invested in winning. We spend to win," Lanning said when asked about Gundy's comments, per ESPN's Paolo Uggetti. "Some people save to have an excuse for why they don't. … I can't speak on their situation; I have no idea what they got in their pockets over there."

Gundy claimed that Oklahoma state spent "around $7 million" on its team over the past three years. He also commented on Oregon's ability to hold on to its top players, saying "it'll cost a lot of money to keep" Ducks quarterback Dante Moore. He also said he feels the school's budget should determine the teams it schedules outside of the Big Ten.

"Oregon is paying a lot, a lot of money for their team," Gundy said. "From a nonconference standpoint, there's coaches saying they should [play teams with similar budgets]."

Lanning added that he has "a lot of respect" for Gundy. The Ducks and the Cowboys are both 1-0 heading into Saturday's showdown. Gundy also had some kind words for Oregon in between his barbs.

"Over the last three to five years, they've elevated themselves. They have a lot of resources," Gundy said. "They've got them stacked out there pretty good right now."
