ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit Clarifies Remark in Viral Video from Bill Belichick's UNC Debut
ESPN college football color commentator Kirk Herbstreit insisted Monday night that he wasn't taking a shot at North Carolina in a clip that went viral during the one-sided game between UNC and TCU.
Upon returning from commercial break with the Horned Frogs leading the Tar Heels 41-14, Herbstreit could be heard laughing, and some thought he said, "They're bad," in reference to the North Carolina football team.
However, Herbstreit clarified the remark, noting that he actually said, "You're bad," to his spotter, Deron, in response to a comment the spotter made:
Herbstreit went on to ask for some love from the fans due to the difficulty of calling a blowout and keeping it interesting:
Monday night marked the collegiate debut of legendary NFL head coach Bill Belichick, who led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl wins during his tenure.
There was a great deal of excitement surrounding Belichick's arrival in Chapel Hill, and it seemed early on in Monday's game like Belichick had the Tar Heels primed and ready to play in their season opener.
On UNC's first offensive drive of the season, the team marched 83 yards on seven plays, culminating in an eight-yard touchdown run by running back Caleb Hood.
It was all downhill from there, though, as TCU scored 41 unanswered points before North Carolina got back on the board again with a touchdown late in the third quarter.
TCU added another score for good measure in fourth, making the final score 48-14 in favor of the Horned Frogs at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill.
While Belichick has long been known for his defensive expertise, he did little to slow down the TCU offense throughout Monday's game.
In fact, TCU racked up 542 total yards of offense, converted 29 first downs and went 7-of-12 in third-down situations.
As for North Carolina, it managed only 222 yards of offense, and 83 of them came on the first drive of the game.
UNC lost two fumbles, including one by starting quarterback Gio Lopez, and Lopez threw an interception as well, prompting Belichick to replace him with Max Johnson, who got the Tar Heels back in the end zone in the third quarter and went 9-of-11 for 103 yards with one touchdown and no picks.
Given how ugly it was for North Carolina's offense throughout the game, it is fair to wonder if Belichick may already be pondering the possibility of a quarterback change.
Things should get a bit easier for the Tar Heels over the next few weeks, allowing them and Belichick to settle in.
It starts with a road game against Charlotte on Saturday before hosting FCS Richmond on Sept. 13 and an away game against UCF on Sept. 20.
Following a bye week, UNC will then have another huge test on Oct. 4 when they host Clemson, who entered Week 1 ranked No. 4 in the nation.
