Bill Belichick Credits TCU in UNC Loss, 'They Just Outplayed Us, They Outcoached Us'
Bill Belichick says he was "outcoached" by TCU's Sonny Dykes in his Monday night debut as UNC's head coach.
Belichick told reporters the Tar Heels suffered "self-inflicted wounds," but ultimately credited TCU for the Horned Frogs' 48-14 win.
"They were clearly the better team tonight. They deserved to win, and they did it decisively," Belichick said during Monday night's press conference (h/t the Tar Heel Tribune).
Belichick continued, "Look, they just outplayed us, they outcoached us. They were just better than we were tonight. That's all there was to it. They controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage. Their skill players played well. They just did a lot more things than we did.
"So give them the credit for being the better team, they certainly deserve it."
Monday night marked Belichick's first time coaching since he and the New England Patriots parted ways after the 2023 NFL season.
The Tar Heels scored on the game's opening drive thanks to an eight-yard touchdown run from Caleb Hood.
But UNC quarterback Gio Lopez struggled to lead UNC back into scoring position after that play.
The Horned Frogs went on to score 41 unanswered points in a stretch highlighted by UNC quarterback Gio Lopez throwing a pick-six in the second quarter and the Tar Heels defense allowing a 75-yard touchdown run from TCU's Kevorian Barnes in the third.
Lopez left the game with a back issue in the third quarter, and the Tar Heels were unable to gain much more offensive momentum with Max Johnson under center.
"We played competitively, but then just couldn't sustain it," Belichick said about his team's start.
Belichick said UNC's work after Tuesday's loss would start with addressing internal issues before preparing for their next opponent.
"We've got to deal with Charlotte, and the problems they present, but we have too many self-inflicted wounds that we have to eliminate before we can worry about addressing our opponents," Belichick said. "So we'll start with that, and then move to Charlotte."
Belichick and the Tar Heels will return to action next Saturday with a road game against Charlotte. The 49ers are also looking for their first win of the season after dropping their own season-opener last Friday with a 34-11 blowout by Appalachian State.
