Carson Beck Was 'Nervous' on GW Kick in Miami's 1st Win vs. AP Top-10 Team Since 2017
Miami quarterback Carson Beck is no stranger to big games, but the final moments of the Hurricanes' 27-24 win over Notre Dame on Sunday were enough to send his heart racing.
Carter Davis nailed a 47-yard field goal with 1:04 remaining to put Miami ahead, and the Canes defense held firm from there.
Beck acknowledged he was "nervous" down the stretch.
"But we got it done," he told reporters.
The sixth-year senior went 20-of-31 for 205 yards and two touchdowns in his Miami debut. While it wasn't a standout performance, he displayed the kind of poise you'd expect from a quarterback with his experience.
That was also a bit of a contrast from how Beck looked in some of Georgia's biggest games a season ago. He had three interceptions in each of their contests against Alabama, Texas and Florida in 2024.
Sunday was the first time since 2017 that Miami beat an opponent who ranked in the Top 10 of the Associated Press poll.
Hurricanes fans have seen enough false dawns to keep their optimism somewhat guarded. Just last year, they watched a 9-0 start turn into a 10-3 finish, culminating in a Pop-Tarts Bowl loss to Iowa State.
Still, Miami made a strong statement against Notre Dame.
Fighting Irish running back Jeremiyah Love was limited to 33 yards on 10 carries. True freshman wide receiver Malachi Toney is already a dynamic target in the passing game after catching six passes for 82 yards and a touchdown. Beck engineered a 10-play, 46 yard drive that ate precious time off the clock in the fourth quarter before Davis' critical field goal.
Between that and a manageable schedule in the regular season, Miami justified its status as a serious College Football Playoff contender.
