Marcus Freeman Defends CJ Carr After Notre Dame's Upset Loss vs. Carson Beck, Miami

Doric SamSep 1, 2025

Despite No. 6 Notre Dame's 27-24 upset loss against No. 10 Miami on Sunday night, head coach Marcus Freeman hasn't lost any confidence in redshirt freshman starting quarterback CJ Carr.

After the game ended with Carr taking back-to-back sacks on the final offensive drive for the Fighting Irish, Freeman defended the youngster and declared that he has a bright future.

"His ceiling is so high," Freeman said, per the Associated Press. "He's going to have to take this loss and not let it eat at him too much. He's a gamer. He performs when the lights are on. He prepares his tail off. He's going to do great things. It's just the start for him."

Carr completed 19 of his 30 passes for 221 yards with two touchdown passes and an interception. He also added a rushing touchdown with 3:21 left in the fourth quarter that tied the game before Miami quarterback Carson Beck led the Hurricanes down the field to set up a go-ahead field goal.

Carr admitted after the game that he needed to be better at getting star running back Jeremiyah Love involved in the offense, as the speedster finished with just 33 yards on 10 carries and four catches for 26 yards.

"I need to continue to get a better feel for what our offense needs at the moment," Carr said. "A lot of the time, it's going to be Jeremiyah Love. On the pick, I should have just given him the ball. It cost us."

Still, Carr isn't dwelling on Sunday's loss too much, and he will face another test when Notre Dame goes up against No. 19 Texas A&M on Sept. 13. He said he learned how to bounce back from a loss from his father, former Michigan quarterback Jason Carr.

"Tonight wasn't good enough out of me specifically," the 20-year-old said. "We've got to get better. My dad always said the only way to get rid of a loss is with a win."
