Yankees Call Up 6'7" Prospect 📈
Tong, a seventh-round pick out of Canada in 2022, started the 2025 season with Double-A Binghamton before being promoted to Triple-A Syracuse recently. He's gone 10-5 with a 1.43 ERA in 113.2 innings across Double-A and Triple-A, throwing 11.2 scoreless innings in his two Triple-A outings. He has 179 strikeouts this season, the most in all of Minor League Baseball.
"I think it's all about dominating the minors," Mendoza said. "It's hard to keep him there."
The Mets are leaning on their young talent to bolster their rotation amid recent struggles. Along with Tong, New York recently called up Nolan McLean, their No. 3 prospect, after Frankie Montas was demoted to the bullpen.
So far, things have gone well for McLean. In two starts, he's allowed just six hits, two runs and four walks, picking up a pair of wins behind a 1.46 ERA and 0.81 WHIP. He pitched seven innings against the Atlanta Braves over the weekend, making him the first Mets pitcher to last six or more innings since Clay Holmes on June 7.
The Mets are hoping Tong can find similar success in his first trip to the majors.
New York struggled for much of August but has started to turn things around, winning six of its last nine games. The Mets hold the last wild card spot in the National League, sitting 2.5 games ahead of the Cincinnati Reds.
