Nick Saban Hilariously Calls Out Greg McElroy After Return to Coaching Rumor

Scott PolacekAug 19, 2025

Nick Saban hasn't coached Greg McElroy since the 2010 season when they were both at Alabama, but the legendary former coach didn't miss a chance to get on his old quarterback's case.

Saban, who retired after the 2023 season, was asked about rumors he would return to coaching and certainly made the crowd laugh with his answer.

"You know, I don't know where that came from," he said (4:50 mark). "Greg McElroy played quarterback for us and if he had done something like that when he was a player, he would have gotten his ass kicked."

Ben Axelrod of Awful Announcing noted McElroy made quite the stir last month when he said during an interview with Paul Finebaum that someone "very much in the know" suggested Saban might not be done coaching.

"This is a little bit out of left field," McElroy said. "But the question was asked of meโ€ฆ [by] a very much in-the-know person that I have a lot of respect for. They seem to think Nick Saban's not done coaching. I had a similar reaction. He's pretty adamant that he thinks Nick Saban will be coaching againโ€ฆ look, if it wasn't someone notable, I'd never say a word."

Saban's tone suggests that is very much not the case, although the seven-time national champion has remained around the game he dominated as one of the analysts on ESPN's College Gameday.

McElroy was the Crimson Tide's starting quarterback during the 2009 and 2010 seasons and led them to the national title during the first of those years. It was one of six national championships Saban won during his astounding career as the head coach at Alabama.

But it seems like there won't be another chapter added to his coaching legacy if his latest comments are any indication.
