NBA Announces Rockets-Thunder, Warriors-Lakers for 2025-26 Opening Night Schedule
The 2025-26 NBA season will officially kick off with a pair of marquee Western Conference matchups.
The NBA announced on Tuesday that the season will begin on Oct. 21 with a doubleheader on NBC and Peacock. In the first game, the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder will meet star forward Kevin Durant and the new-look Houston Rockets. In the nightcap, the Los Angeles Lakers will host the Golden State Warriors.
Of course, Durant's arrival to the Rockets in a blockbuster trade from the Phoenix Suns earlier this offseason makes the matchup against the Thunder even more intriguing. The 36-year-old began his career with the Oklahoma City franchise before bolting to the rival Warriors and winning two NBA championships. Now, he will watch from the other side as his former Thunder team hangs a championship banner and celebrates with a ring ceremony, something he was unable to achieve during his tenure.
Oklahoma City has the best collection of young talent in the NBA, led by the star trio of reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, wing Jalen Williams and center Chet Holmgren. All three of them were signed to massive contract extensions this offseason, setting the Thunder up to contend for another NBA title this season and for years to come.
Still, making it through the Western Conference won't be an easy road, with veteran teams like the Lakers and Warriors hoping to make a run with their aging stars. Los Angeles will be led by the duo of Luka Doncic and LeBron James, the latter of whom has made it clear that he's nearing the end of his legendary career. Golden State will be relying on stars Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green as it chases title contention.
The season-opening doubleheader is an indication that the NBA is preparing to bring an exciting slate of matchups for its return to NBC. Fans will by hyped to see the rest of the 2025-26 schedule when it officially drops on Thursday.
