Cam Thomas Reportedly Open to Playing on $6M Nets Contract, Eyes 2026 NBA Free Agency

Zach BacharAug 10, 2025

Restricted free agent Cam Thomas is reportedly willing to play on a short-term contract for the Brooklyn Nets next season before targeting a larger deal as an unrestricted free agent in 2026.

"Sources also say Thomas is showing an increasing interest in playing out next season on a $6 million qualifier for the right to enjoy true free agency next summer," NBA insider Jake Fischer reported Sunday.

Per Fischer, Brooklyn hasn't made an "aggressive effort" to sign Thomas to a long-term contract.

Prior to Oct. 1, Thomas is eligible to sign a qualifying offer worth $6 million for the 2025-26 season (h/t ESPN's Bobby Marks).

His exact value as a free agent is uncertain around the league, with Fred Katz of The Athletic conducting a poll of 16 NBA executives regarding Thomas on July 30 and revealing that it "left even high-ranking front office personnel wondering what his next deal might look like."

The 23-year-old showcased his scoring prowess with Brooklyn last season, averaging 24.0 points and 3.8 assists per game on 43.8/34.9/88.1 shooting splits.

It's worth noting that Thomas only appeared in 25 games, as he was hampered by hamstring issues.

While his ability to create his own offense is certainly valuable, his passing and defense are still areas that need improvement. Thomas owns career averages of 2.1 assists compared to 1.4 turnovers per game.

The Nets also posted a 120.6 defensive rating with Thomas on the court last season, the worst mark on the team (via NBA.com).

With his restricted free agency outcome murky, the former first-round pick could agree to a one-year deal in order to display more consistency and earn a larger payday next summer.
