Joe Mazzulla, Celtics Agree to Contract Extension Ahead of 2025-26 NBA Season

Adam WellsAug 8, 2025

Having led the Boston Celtics to the most wins in the regular season over the past three seasons and an NBA title during the 2023-24 campaign, head coach Joe Mazzulla has received a new contract from the club.

The Celtics announced on Friday they have signed Mazzulla to a multiyear extension.

"This is truly a blessing," Mazzulla said in a statement announcing the deal. "I would not be here without my faith, my wife, and my children. We are thankful for the partnership with our ownership groups, Brad’s mentorship, and the support of our staff. Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach the past three seasons. I look forward to competing for the Celtics and the city of Boston."

Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens also included a statement about extending the club's partnership with Mazzulla:

"We are very excited that Joe has agreed to extend with the Celtics. He understands the job and has a passion for the Celtics that is only rivaled by our most die-hard fans. He’s worked hard and accomplished amazing things in his first three years as a head coach – including averaging over 60 wins per season and winning the 2024 NBA Championship. Joe is a gifted leader who brings a consistent commitment to learning, improving, and maximizing each day we get to compete for the Boston Celtics."

The Celtics have not confirmed the length of Mazzulla's new deal. He was originally hired as interim head coach in September 2022 after Ime Udoka was suspended for the entire 2022-23 season for violating multiple team policies.

Mazzulla was officially named full-time head coach and given a contract extension in February 2023. The Celtics went 57-25 in his first season, losing to the Miami Heat in seven games in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The 2023-24 season was one of the best in franchise history. Mazzulla led the Celtics to a 64-18 record and a plus-11.6 net rating that is tied for the fourth-best in NBA history.

In the postseason, Boston posted a 16-3 record to win its record-breaking 18th NBA title. The 2016-17 Golden State Warriors are the only team with a better playoff record (16-1) since the NBA expanded the first round to seven games in 2003.

Last season saw the Celtics finish 61-21 in the regular season. They lost in the second round of the playoffs to the New York Knicks. Jayson Tatum suffered a torn Achilles in Game 4 of that series, which will keep him out for most, if not all, of 2025-26.

The upcoming season will be the first major test for Mazzulla with a team that's not regarded as one of the favorites to win the NBA title. In addition to not having Tatum due to an injury, the Celtics traded Kristaps Porziņģis, Jrue Holiday and lost Luke Kornet to the San Antonio Spurs in free agency.

Even though the Celtics aren't as loaded with talent as they have been, Jaylen Brown and Derrick White are still around to keep them competitive in a wide-open Eastern Conference.
