Gold Cup 2015: Latest Group Results, Tables, Schedule After Canada vs Costa Rica

Tom SunderlandJul 15, 2015

Costa Rica drew 0-0 against Canada on Tuesday evening to edge their way into the knockout stage of this year's Gold Cup by the skin of their teeth, while the Canucks saw their tournament come to an end.

Wednesday brings about the final batch of pool fixtures, and all four Group C combatants have a chance of advancing to the next phase, with current leaders Trinidad and Tobago already sealing their progress.

Cuba and Guatemala face off in a clash between bottom contenders, having taken just a point between them thus far, while the Trinidadians will seek to make it three group wins from three against El Tri on Wednesday.

Cuba vs. Guatemala

One of two teams yet to register even a single goal at this year's Gold Cup, Cuba will hope to end their drought against Guatemala on Wednesday and finish above a tame Canada team in the scoring ranks.

Their midweek opponents, Guatemala, are in high spirits after claiming a 0-0 draw against Mexico, a result of which coach Ivan Franco Sopegno says they can be rightly proud, per ESPN Tri:

That scoreline gave Guatemala their first point of the competition and puts them in pole position to take third place in Group C, but they need to beat Cuba in order to go through ahead of El Salvador.

While the performance of the senior team at this year's tournament has been disappointing, manager Raul Gonzalez Triana is quoted by ESPN FC's Tom Marshall as outlining the future generation as a priority:

The Cubans have conceded eight goals in total across their first two games, while Guatemala did well to respond so well against Mexico following an opening 3-1 loss against Trinidad and Tobago.

Everything is still to play for between Cuba and Guatemala, and third place in Group C will go to the victor of their encounter, but Triana's men face an uphill task in turning things around at this late stage.

Mexico vs. Trinidad and Tobago

Miguel Herrera's Mexico were expected to compete for the 2015 Gold Cup crown as title favourites, but El Tri have been a shadow of their former selves so far.

A scoreless draw against Guatemala on Sunday leaves Mexico in second place, two points off Trinidad and Tobago, but a win on Wednesday could still see them take top spot.

With a priority place in the knockout stages on the line, it will be interesting to see how Soca Warriors coach Stephen Hart approaches the fixture, needing only a draw to sew up the Group C throne.

Herrera has made his feelings known on the treatment of Mexico, too, in the wake of their stalemate against Guatemala, per ESPN FC's Marshall. He hinted refereeing decisions aren't going in Mexico's favour:

"

After watching the videos (of Sunday's 0-0 tie against Guatemala), there were no cards (given by the ref) after eight or nine fouls. We now know how it will be. If they don't give you that handball (decision) against Guatemala, teams will (start) playing with two goalkeepers (against us). It was so clear.

"

Leaders Trinidad and Tobago will be El Tri's most difficult test of the tournament thus far, and there's a major difference between placing first and placing second in Group C.

Whoever tops the pool gets a more favourable quarterfinal tie against Panama, while the runners-up will take on the more formidable Costa Rica, giving each team motivation to clinch first place.
