Son Heung-Min Reportedly to Join LAFC After MLS-Record $26 Million Transfer Fee

Timothy RappAug 4, 2025

Former Tottenham star Son Heung-Min is expected to join LAFC this summer, with the MLS side paying a league-record transfer fee in the ballpark of $26 million, according to ESPN's Jeff Carlisle and Lizzy Becherano.

Son's friendly appearance for Tottenham on Sunday was his final appearance for the club after announcing his intention to leave this summer.

"It was a perfect moment," he said. "Sharing these beautiful moments are something that I will never forget and I will always appreciate it—from the fans, the players and the gaffer. He understood my situation and was always on my side. He always listened to me and asked what I wanted to do. I have a huge respect and am very grateful."

For years, the duo of Harry Kane and Son led Tottenham's attack. While the pair didn't lead Spurs to any meaningful hardware during their time together, they did reach the Champions League final in the 2018-19 season, losing 2-0 to Liverpool.

But Kane departed for Bayern Munich ahead of the 2023-24 season, and the 33-year-old Son finally saw a dip in quality for Spurs last season, notching seven goals and nine assists across 24 contests in Premier League play. That ended a string of eight consecutive seasons with double-digit league goals for Son.

Since debuting for Spurs in 2015-16, Son posted 20 or more goal contributions in a Premier League season (goals plus assists) five times. He is undoubtedly a club legend and went out on top, as Tottenham finally ended their major trophy drought by winning the Europa League last season. Son was a second-half substitution in Spurs' 1-0 win over Manchester United in the final.

He'll be a major upgrade for LAFC as they look to push for a playoff berth and title this season. The club is currently sixth in the Western Conference on 36 points.

The previous record for an MLS transfer fee came last season, when Atlanta United FC paid Middlesborough a $22 million transfer fee for striker Emmanuel Latte Lath.
