What Victor Wembanyama Can Make in 2026 Contract After Fox Deal amid Spurs Salary Cap
The San Antonio Spurs reportedly extended the contract of De'Aaron Fox on Monday and will now prepare to potentially hand Victor Wembanyama a new long-term deal next offseason.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Fox signed a four-year contract worth $229 million to remain with the Spurs through the 2029-30 season.
San Antonio now has $140 million in projected salary for the 2026 offseason, when Wembanyama is eligible to receive a rookie extension (h/t ESPN's Bobby Marks).
Per Marks, Wembanyama will be eligible to sign a five-year, $271 million extension. If he wins MVP, Defensive Player of the Year or is named to an All-NBA team in 2026-27, the extension value would rise to $326 million.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft currently has two seasons remaining on his rookie deal, which includes a $16.9 million team option for the 2026-27 season.
If Wembanyama signs a rookie extension after reaching one of the aforementioned significant milestones in San Antonio and stays with the organization throughout the duration of the agreement, he'd also be able to sign a supermax extension for his third contract.
According to SI.com's Matt Guzman, Wembanyama can negotiate a player option for the final year of his rookie extension. He would then be able to decline it and eventually sign a five-year supermax deal worth roughly $513 million starting with the 2031-32 season, assuming the salary cap continues to rise seven to 10 percent annually.
It isn't difficult to imagine Wembanyama meeting the requirement, as he finished No. 2 in Defensive Player of the Year voting as a rookie and seemed to be a strong contender to earn the honor in 2025 before he season came to an early end due to deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder.
The 21-year-old has already excelled on both ends of the court to open his NBA career, averaging 22.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.7 blocks per game on 46.9/33.9/80.9 shooting splits across two years in San Antonio.
If Wembanyama continues on his upwards career trajectory, he'll be in line for several massive paydays.
