Luka Doncic Contract Extension Is 'Monumental Moment' for Lakers, Rob Pelinka Says
Rob Pelinka is resting easy after Luka Dončić gave the Los Angeles Lakers a commitment on Saturday by signing a three-year, $165 million extension that ties him to the organization through at least the 2027-28 season.
In a statement released after Dončić signed his deal, Pelinka called this a "monumental moment" for the Lakers as they begin building around him with the goal of competing for championships:
"Today is a monumental moment for our franchise. Luka Dončić’s future is with the Los Angeles Lakers. Luka is one of the game’s most transcendent players, and his on-court dominance and passion is without compare. From the moment Luka became a Laker, there was an immediate connection and admiration between Luka and our fanbase. You can feel it in your spirit when you attend a Lakers game. Luka is an absolute killer on the court, and blends that with a unique generosity and care for the community. Above all else, Luka will lead our franchise to pursue future championships, a goal that will forever define the Lakers."
Even more than whatever is happening with LeBron James and his relationship with the organization, the most important storyline for the Lakers this summer was Dončić's contract.
While there had been talk that Dončić was happy in Los Angeles and wasn't looking to go anywhere, Lakers fans were going to be uneasy until he signed a new deal.
Getting a commitment from Dončić that keeps him under contract for at least the next three seasons opens up a world of possibilities for Pelinka and the Lakers front office going forward.
The Lakers have been very deliberate with their moves this offseason to avoid putting themselves in a difficult financial position going forward.
There weren't a lot of top-tier free agents on the market this summer, so their biggest investment was a two-year, $16.2 million deal for Deandre Ayton that includes a player option for the second season.
Factoring in Dončić's extension, the Lakers only have $105 million in salary commitments for the 2026-27 season. Dončić is the only player with a guaranteed salary for the 2027-28 campaign at this point.
Pelinka doesn't have a great track record of building around a superstar talent since taking over as Lakers general manager in March 2017, but he nailed the most important move he had to make in the summer of 2019 by acquiring Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans to play with James. The duo led the franchise to a championship in their first season together.
Dončić is the long-term face of the franchise for the Lakers. Pelinka's next step will be finding the right second star to pair with the five-time All-Star for the long-term future.
