NBA Insider Says LeBron James' Lakers Future 'Depends On How This Coming Season Goes'
Though talks of LeBron James leaving the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason have seemingly cooled down, his future is still in question heading into the 2025-26 campaign.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the year ahead could be pivotal in helping James decide what he wants to do next offseason. Stein noted that a source said James' Lakers future "all really depends on how this coming season goes."
James had the chance to enter free agency this summer, but he exercised his $52.6 million contract option with Los Angeles. Upon doing so, James' agent, Rich Paul, made it clear that he wants to be on a Finals-contending team.
"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul said, per ESPN's Shams Charania. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.
"We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him."
The Lakers have made a few moves to improve their roster heading into the season. They signed Deandre Ayton, addressing a major need in the frontcourt, and added a veteran point guard in Marcus Smart.
Any team with James and Luka Dončić is going to be competitive, but whether they'll have enough to contend for a championship remains to be seen.
If James feels his chances of winning another title are better elsewhere, he could be on his way out of Los Angeles this time next year.
