Sherrone Moore Says Michigan Will Have QB1 Competition amid Bryce Underwood Buzz
Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore is making top recruit Bryce Underwood earn his spot as the starting quarterback.
“Before anyone asks, it’s an open competition. There is no starter," Moore said, per ON3's Brett McMurphy. "When they ‘have the team’ we’ll know we have our starter.”
Out of high school, the 5-star prospect and No. 1 nationally ranked quarterback by 247Sports isn’t being handed anything — and Moore is making sure the 17-year-old earns his starting role despite all the hype.
“I told him I’m not giving you anything," Moore said, per McMurphy. "You have to earn it. His words: I wouldn’t want it any other way”
“He’s grown every single day since he’s been on campus,” Moore continued, per ON3's Grant Grubbs. “He’s been with us since December, continues to do everything he can to be, one, the best teammate he could be. Two, to be best student he could be. And then, three, to be the best football player he could be and quarterback that he could be for our football team. He does everything the right way."
In addition to Underwood, the Wolverines will be closely evaluating Mikey Keene, a transfer from Fresno State, and senior Davis Warren for the starting quarterback job.
The Michigan Wolverines will kick off their season against New Mexico on Aug. 30.
