NBA Execs Reportedly 'Closely Watching' Trae Young's Status with Hawks amid Rumors

Zach BacharJul 18, 2025

Rival organizations have been monitoring the long-term status of Atlanta Hawks star point guard Trae Young, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.

"Executives in Las Vegas were closely watching and monitoring the future and status of Atlanta's Trae Young," Charania reported during a Friday appearance on NBA Today (1:00 mark).

Young still has two seasons remaining on a five-year, $215 million deal that he signed with Atlanta in 2021. That includes a $49 million player option for the 2026-27 season.

The four-time All-Star is now eligible to receive a four-year, $229 million contract extension.

If extension negotiations between Young and the Hawks don't gain traction, his outlook with the organization becomes murky.

He doesn't appear to be actively envisioning a future outside of Atlanta, though.

"But Trae Young, by all accounts I'm told is locked in," Charania reported Friday (1:35). "He's excited about this team."

Young is coming off an impressive individual season during the Hawks' 2024-25 campaign, averaging 24.2 points and a league-leading 11.6 assists per game on 41.1/34.0/87.5 shooting splits.

Atlanta has failed to make the playoffs in each of the past two years despite the point guard's offensive output, although a return to the postseason could be in store following a flurry of offseason moves.

The Hawks acquired center Kristaps Porziล†ฤฃis as part of a three-team trade involving the Boston Celtics before adding guard Nickeil Alexander-Walkerย on a four-year deal worth $62 million.

Atlanta also signed sharpshooter Luke Kennard to a one-year deal worth $11 million in free agency.

While the Hawks continue to navigate through the offseason, opposing teams are reportedly keeping an eye on Young's status.
