Bradley Beal, Suns Reportedly Had 'Heated' Contract Buyout Talks as Suns Wanted More

Scott PolacekJul 17, 2025

The Phoenix Suns and Bradley Beal went their separate ways this offseason, but reportedly not before there were some "heated" discussions surrounding his eventual buyout.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Wednesday that Beal and Phoenix agreed to a contract buyout that allowed him to join the Los Angeles Clippers on a two-year, $11 million deal that will feature a player option.

On Thursday, ESPN's Brian Windhorst explained the buyout would only work if Beal left at least $13.9 million on the table because a maximum of 15 percent of the salary cap can be allocated for bought-out players.

Windhorst reported the Suns "hoped" he would leave more, which led to "heated talks" before the guard "left the least amount possible to make the waiver work, to the penny."

Agent Mark Bartelstein said, "there were some intense conversations."

As Windhorst explained, the Beal departure was not out of nowhere for the Suns.

Beal met with Bartelstein during the offseason and "decided that he needed to move on from Phoenix, if the opportunity presented itself." What's more, the team acquiring Jalen Green in the Kevin Durant trade left his role even further undefined if he remained for the 2025-26 campaign.

The Suns gave him permission to speak to other teams about joining them after a possible buyout, and the Clippers became a realistic destination after they traded wing scorer Norman Powell to the Miami Heat.

Windhorst noted the guard also has a positive relationship with Clippers head coach Ty Lue, while Charania reported James Harden "was a focal point in recruiting" him to join Los Angeles:

That there were reportedly tense discussions between the Suns and Beal even before the Clippers decision is notable, as his no-trade clause largely prevented them from making impact moves ahead of the trade deadline during the 2024-25 season that ended in disappointment for Phoenix.

But now the focus is on the future, and Charania noted the Clippers believe the University of Florida product is a "perfect fit" alongside Harden and Kawhi Leonard.

He should see plenty of open three-pointers with opposing defenses so focused on the pair of veteran stars, and it wasn't long ago when he connected on 43 percent of his triples during the 2023-24 campaign.

Even when he averaged just 17 points a night last season, he still hit a solid 38.6 percent of his three-point attempts.

The Beal who averaged better than 30 points per game in 2019-20 and again in 2020-21 may not return at this stage of his career, but Los Angeles still added a veteran scorer who can take full advantage of the openings he is likely to see next season.

He may even be additionally motivated to bounce back after a disappointing ending with the Suns.
