Texas Tech's Roster Reportedly to Cost More Than $28M for 2025 CFB Season
Texas Tech's football roster will reportedly cost more than $28 million this season, according to On3's Pete Nakos.
The list of top-10 schools includes some of college football's top programs and projected national championship contenders, including reigning national title winner Ohio State, potential preseason No. 1 Texas and last year's No. 1 College Football Playoff seed, Oregon.
Texas Tech admittedly sticks out a bit. The Red Raiders went 8-5 last year with a 6-3 record in Big 12 play. They were never ranked in the Associated Press poll and haven't been in the Top 25 since 2018. Additionally, Texas Tech hasn't won more than eight games since 2009.
The Red Raiders have had their moments, notably rising as high as No. 2 in the nation in 2009 and once calling the program home to future three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes. And they have promise under head coach Joey McGuire, who is entering his fourth season at the helm.
The price point for the 2025 roster, though, would seemingly be more befitting of a national contender or a loaded class, at least on paper.
The guess is that Texas Tech does take another step forward as a program this year, though. The Sporting News preseason top 25 poll, a composite list of 11 preseason top 25 lists, has Texas Tech at No. 22. The Red Raiders are also 21st overall on the class of 2025 rankings, per 247Sports, including second in transfer rankings.
Of note, the team brought in 13 four-star prospects.
We'll see soon enough how the $28 million-plus roster begins panning out when the team begins the season against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Aug. 30.
