Deion Sanders Gets Advice from Michael Irvin for Big 12 Media Day in New Video
Colorado head coach Deion Sanders shared a special moment with a longtime friend and former teammate during Big 12 Media Day on Wednesday.
In a behind-the-scenes video released on Thursday (14:22 mark), Sanders had a visit from legendary wide receiver and football analyst Michael Irvin. The former Dallas Cowboys stars shared some laughs as Irvin doled out some advice.
"This joker ain't been on TV in a while, ain't been in front of the mics in a while. I'm telling him, go out there and go slow," Irvin said. "Don't try to go bombing and get a touchdown, just get a few first downs. Just get a few first downs, and then you'll get a touchdown."
Sanders said the moment reminded him of when Irvin visited him to help him prepare for an interview for his first broadcasting role with CBS.
"He came by the crib and taught me television," Sanders said of Irvin. "... I'll never forget that."
Irvin provided some more details about the memory, saying he stressed the importance of Sanders being himself. Sanders has carried that advice over to his new career as Coach Prime.
"Time was asking me at the time, he said, 'Man, I'm thinking about wearing a blue suit, I don't want to hit them with too much.' I said, 'They didn't hire blue suit, they hired Prime Time,'" Irvin said. "I said, 'Wear you. Wear you. Do you. Be you.' That's the most powerful thing out there, walking in, do you. That's why they hired you."
The former teammates shared one more hug before Sanders walked to the dais to field questions from reporters.
Sanders and the Buffaloes will open the 2025 season on Aug. 29 at home against Georgia Tech.
