Calvin Russell Commits to Syracuse, 4-Star is No. 5-Ranked WR in Class of 2026

Four-star wide receiver Calvin Russell has committed to Syracuse, he announced Saturday on social media.

Russell is ranked as the No. 5 wide receiver and No. 47 overall prospect in the Class of 2026 according to 247Sports composite rankings.

The 6-foot-5, 295-pound receiver out of Northwestern High School in Miami, Florida, chose Syracuse over Florida State, Michigan and Oregon.

The announcement came as a surprise after Russell never took an official visit to Syracuse and said last week that he was only considering Oregon, Michigan and Florida State, per On3's John Garcia Jr. Russell did take at least four unofficial visits to Syracuse, Garcia noted.

247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins described Russell in May as a "hulking wide receiver with above-the-rim athleticism that makes him a uniquely dangerous target."

"Will need to add some body armor to a rather wiry frame in hopes of improving play strength and buy into the process at the school of his choice, but should be viewed as a potential impact pass catcher for a College Football Playoff contender that can be positioned all around the field in hopes of creating mismatches," Ivins wrote.

Russell would become the highest-ranked player to sign with Syracuse when his commitment becomes official, according to ESPN's Eli Lederman.

He is the first five-star prospect to commit to the Orange since wide receiver Johnnie Morant in 2000 and quarterback Cecil Howard in 2001, per Quinn Postman of the Daily Orange.

Russell's signing marks a major victory for football Fran Brown, who led Syracuse to its first 10-win season since 2018 in his first campaign as head coach last fall.

Syracuse's recruiting class, which was No. 88 in the nation in 2023 according to 247Sports composite rankings, climbed to a top-50 program with Brown's first two recruiting classes in 2024 and 2025.

Russell's decision could also impact men's basketball coach Adrian Autry. Russell previously indicated on his Instagram page that he holds an offer from Syracuse basketball as well.
