Lakers Reportedly Won't Get Additional Assets in Rumored 7-Team Kevin Durant Trade

Adam WellsJul 5, 2025

If the potentially historic seven-team trade headlined by Kevin Durant ending up with the Houston Rockets is compelted, the Los Angeles Lakers are not expected to get anything in return for losing Dorian Finney-Smith.

Per The Athletic's Fred Katz, there's no traction on the Lakers attempting to facilitate a sign-and-trade involving Finney-Smith as part of the deal.

Even though the Durant trade to Houston was agreed to on June 22, the deal can't be finalized until Sunday when the moratorium period officially ends.

In the process of making finances work for everyone involved, the original deal between the Rockets and Phoenix Suns has grown exponentially.

NBA insider Jake Fischer reported on Thursday the deal has expanded to include seven teams, with the Lakers, Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves and Atlanta Hawks involved.

The trade would be the largest in NBA history, surpassing the six-team deal last summer highlighted by Klay Thompson going to the Dallas Mavericks.

Katz noted the Rockets are acquiring Clint Capela in a sign-and-trade as part of the deal. They will use the full midlevel exception to sign Finney-Smith, meaning they don't have to give the Lakers anything to bring him in.

Los Angeles will reportedly end up with the rights to Adou Thiero, the No. 36 pick in the 2025 NBA draft, from the Nets.

Finney-Smith agreed to a four-year, $53 million deal with the Rockets at the start of free agency. The Lakers reportedly only offered him a two-year deal to keep their long-term cap clear with the hope of eventually adding a second superstar next to Luka Dončić.

Things have been relatively quiet for the Lakers from a transaction standpoint so far this offseason. They have agreed to deals with Deandre Ayton, Jake LaRavia and will bring back Jaxson Hayes.

Obviously, LeBron James is the biggest thread dangling out there amid rumors he could be looking for a new home. There's been no movement in that area thus far, but it's a situation everyone in the NBA will be keeping an eye on.
